Ben de diyorum ki, bu Samsa denen böcek işinden nefret ediyormuş. Zaten patronu da her fırsatta bu adamı böcek gibi ezdiği için iş dünyasından da ailesine karşı omuzlarına binmiş sorumluluktan da bezmiş...

Bir yandan babasının hiç çalışmaması da koyuyor bu Samsa denen gereksize ona da ufaktan ayar oluyor... Diyor ki ben şimdi böcek olsam bu adama (babasından bahsediyor) binecek tüm sorumluluk. Müstehaktır diyor...

Sister dedikleri kızı da konservatuvara göndermek istiyordu bu Samsa, onunla da bi bağlantı kurmak lazım bulamadım tam ama...

Bir de bağımsızlığın ancak toplumdan kendini izole ederek kazanılabileceğini düşünüyor olmalı ki böcek olmayı tercih ediyor... Bağımsızlık üzerine 1 paragraf yazabilirim.

Böceklerin toplum tarafından pek sevilmeyen heyvanlar olmasının da Samsa'nın sevgiye muhtaç olduğunu sembolize ettiğini söyleyenler var hatta işi abartıp Adem/Havva hikayesindeki elmaya kadar götürenler var ama bunlardan pek bahsetmeyi düşünmüyorum. :/

Question: Why does Gregor Samsa turn into a beetle?

Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis is the book that was criticized by many people. In order to specify what Kafka tries to tell us in his book, various famous intellectuals put into words their opinions. Despite their difference of opinion, they affirm that Metamorphosis has not a clear message about life or something else. However, the book needs to be analyzed in different aspects by the help of the authorities’ ideas. To exemplify, in his article “Kafka’s Metamorphosis” Tom Hartman argues the spiritual and physical progress of Gregor Samsa. Additionally, Stanley Hill claims that Gregor Samsa’s metamorphosis is related to his family and business relationships in his article “Kafka’s Metamorphosis”. In other words, Samsa’s responsibilities to his family and his boss is the key point of his metamorphosis. Also ‘being insect’ in the book can be interpreted differently. Getting different answers to what insect means for the different societies is possible. Therefore, analyzing what is ‘being insect’ and what is insect is crucial for this research paper. In addition, answering why does Gregor Samsa turn into a beetle should be easier by analyzing the issues about his family and business life and its effects on his mental world and personality.


Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis has lots of elements that can be analyzed under the symbolism. The story is starting with the famous introduction. “When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin.” (1) Kafka starts his story abruptly. He claims that Samsa woke up and he suddenly understand the change of his physical status. The keyword of this famous introduction is ‘vermin’. In another translations, translators could use another words like beetle, bug or insect but the ‘vermin’ means insect generally. Usage of this translated word is important because vermin sometimes associated with the carrying of disease. In other words, by saying ‘vermin’, Kafka is determining the status of Gregor Samsa. Despite the meaning of vermin is negative for many people, Gregor Samsa is complacent. Many people does not like vermins, and these people would be scared or disgusted if they were a vermin. Moreover, many of them could be scared or disgusted if they see a vermin. In this perspective, it can be said that Gregor Samsa looks this situation positively. He does not scared or disgusted. Actually at first he does not control his bodies’ parts and he is trying to understand what is happening. Actually, he does not understand that he tranformed into a beetle. First of all he is complaining about his job. Complaining about job can be paraphrased that he does not like his job. If he knew that he is a beetle, most probably he would not disgusted or scared. If the symbol of the keyword ‘vermin’ is analyzed, it can be seen that vermin is a thing that is not liked in society. In this way, Samsa’s view to a ‘vermin’ is not important at all. It’s all about the society. In the story, society is family. It is the assertion of Stanley Hill that “His change brings disaster to his family. Their torment is too much for Gregory’s sister to bear and she says: "We must get rid of it..."”(161) Actually Gregory’s sister loves his brother. After the transformation, she does not abide to this extra-ordinary situation. She wants to get rid of his brother who wants to send her conservatory because of the love of the violin. She did not know this secret plan but it does not change the situation. Being vermin is enough to disgust people even these people are your family. Therefore the usage of the word is very important. If Kafka chooses another little non-disgusting animal like ant, ladybird or bee, he would not imply the disgusting, scaring, strange and horrifying part of being animal. As a consequence, ‘vermin’ is a word that has a negative meaning and Kafka choose this animal consciously in order to give a disgusting meaning.


Gregor Samsa’s business life and his family relationships have an effect to his transformation. Business world has always been an effect on the individual workers. Capitalist system does not care about the workers’ mental or physical condition. A relationship between boss and workers always cause several important problems in the real world. One of the victims of capitalist system is Gregor Samsa. He is a traveling salesman. He has a boss who squashes him like a bug. Actually the relationship between Gregor Samsa and his boss is not different from the relationship between another workers and bosses. However, like another workers, Gregor Samsa is dissatisfied with his jobs because of the capitalist system. In spite of the fact that he does not like his job, he needs this job in order to take care of his family. His father does not work. He has a sister. Every single member of a family needs money to live. Gregor Samsa needs to earn money because he is the one who can work in the family. Father – son relationship is another important factor that has an effect on why does Gregor Samsa turn into a beetle. Gregor Samsa’s father is pensioner. Therefore, he does not work. After his retirement, Gregor Samsa is starting to work and taking care of his family. Gregor Samsa’s father was a disciplined man when he was working. Therefore he looks forward same disciplinary from Gregor Samsa. Exaggerated discipline can cause a depression. His fathers pressure and responsibility sensation have also an effect to his transformation. Transformation makes his father return to job. Gregor Samsa might want to make his father return to job due to this depression and pressure. On the other hand, his job is like slavery for him in such a case. He thinks that marketing is mindless, fruitless job. Many people do not like jobs that they have and many of them believe that they deserve better job. Gregor Samsa’s beliefs are not different from them. He also thinks that this situation is temporary. He looks forward to better days. Making comfortable his parents life is his one of the main purposes. Additionally, he thinks that the other traveling salesmen have a better life. (Kafka 4) This situation can be interpreted with this proverb: “the grass is always greener on the other side.” This jealous behavior of Gregor Samsa is one of another reason to his transformation. Transforming a beetle ensures him a really good life after all of these inequalities, which is assimilated by Gregor Samsa jealously. Transformation is a symbol of getting rid of all his responsibility and breaking the inequality in his business career. Ultimately, Kafka has been worked as a clerk in the insurance company. (Loveday 1) He also does not like his job. He may wants to reflect this feeling to the story. Therefore, Gregor Samsa has a terrible job. While isolating himself from the society, he gets rid of this terrible job. On the other hand lack of values in his life and the lives of people around him makes him desperate and unhappy. However, everything is changed after his transformation. His family and business life is changed radically.


As a consequence, the word of 'vermin' is chose deliberately. It has a negative meaning in the society. If Kafka chose another little animal, the story would be completely different and possibly it could not be understood clearly. Negativity of a word reflects Kafka's pessimist world. It reflects the status of Gregor Samsa's family and business relationships. Transformation also means another meaning like isolation. Kafka does not use a clear expression style. In addition, capitalist system is one of the main reasons of Gregor Samsa’s transformation. Boss – worker relationship causes several important problems. Gregor Samsa is one of the aggrieved people of diabolical capitalist system. He is a traveler salesman. He thinks that it is a worthless job. Therefore he does not like his job. While he hating his boss, he hates his job. However, he needs to work because he is the only person who can work in the family. Gaining money is his main purpose but when gaining money he cannot be happy. Transforming a beetle ensures him a life that is not has any responsibility. His father needs to work after his transformation. In this way he resolve another main problem in his life. Gregor Samsa’s father is a disciplinary man and this discipline makes Gregor Samsa uncomfortable. If his father returns to his job again, Gregor Samsa gets rid of all his responsibilities. Beetle is the best choice in order to get rid of all his responsibilities.
