    The So-Called Armenian Genocide

    The So-Called Armenian Genocide

According to the "Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide" which went into effect on January 11, 1951, and was approved by Turkey, the term genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group and as such killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group, deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part, imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group and forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

The intent to destroy the group in whole or in part differs from the killing of people in wars, rebellions or similar incidents from a genocide.

Those who carry out research in the Ottoman archives, have not found any document, which describes the incidents that occurred in the war on the Eastern front during the transportation of the Armenian people living only in this region to remote regions of the country aimed at ensuring the security of the army against rebellious Armenian gangs as a "genocide". On the contrary, impartial scientists, who have examined the issue, have proved that the Armenian claims are all groundless.

However, those groundless claims were used as a cover during the acts of terrorism carried out by the terrorist organization, ASALA, against Turkish diplomats. 34 Turkish diplomats were killed by the Asala terrorist organization.

During the last two years, efforts have accelerated for the acceptance of resolutions on the so-called Armenian genocide by legislative bodies in various Western countries.

It is not a coincidence that Kocharian, the first Tashnak member to be elected President of Armenia after it regained its independence in 1991, and the decision of the Armenian diaspora to go against Turkey due to certain strange reasons were the basic reasons for accelerating these efforts. Naturally, the connection between Yerevan and the diaspora has been an instrument for internal policy in countries where there are people of Armenian origin.

Finally, a draft resolution, which is about the US federal officials' being informed on the so-called Armenian genocide during their professional in-training and the description of the 1915 incidents as a "genocide" by the American President in his messages on 24 April, which was presented to the US House of Representatives by two congressmen, was accepted at the International Operations and Human Rights Sub-Committee on 21 September. According to procedure, the resolution should be debated at the International Relations Committee before being discussed at the House of Representatives' General Council. The resolution was approved at the International Relations Committee on October 3.

Such efforts make the normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey difficult. Apart from the relations between the two countries, this process does not help efforts aimed to create an atmosphere of security and tranquility in Caucasia. Furthermore, it adversely affects Turkey's relations with these countries, whose Parliaments have drafted such resolutions.
